PRE-PRODUCTION: (Lecture) Briefing & Group Tutorial

Research is key

Time management - deadlines

Equal time on dissertation and pre-production

Transmission - term 2 & 3

Dissertation (30 credits)

- 3 tutorials prior to draft hand-in
- Draft hand-in - 27th November
- 1 draft feedback tutorial in final week of term
- Final submission - 25th January

Pre-production (30 credits)

- Specialising on one skill set e.g. producing, writing etc
- One main output e.g. drama, documentary etc
- Project submission - 11th December, 10:00
- Aim of this unit is to produce a detailed pre-production "package" for an original production
- Two parts - high concept pre-production & major project pre production

High concept pre-production
- Large scale idea that is aimed at competing with what is on television now
- A package that communicates your idea to a potential broadcast commissioner - but not actually being taken into production
- Allows you to think BIG
- The package can be made of a variety of elements - pitch, script, casting, production design, trailer, camera tests, etc
- Focused on your own interests
- Choose a new idea for the major project or join another group

Major project pre-production
- A pre production plan / package for a project, which will be taken into production in term 2
- Maximum length - 20 minutes

External collaboration - in the following areas only:
- cast / presenters / actors
- music
- production design / costume
- special FX

Pitch must include:
- The idea
- Synopsis and pitch
- The platform (television or internet)
- Audience

Choice: Major project pre-production
Job role: Producer, within a group

We chose to do the major project pre-production role because we all knew we wanted to start the pre-production for our major project as soon as possible, giving us that head start in January. Also the longer we have to plan the film, hopefully the better it'll turn out. During the Transitions unit we lacked on time management, and didn't give enough time to that unit, especially to locations and casting, therefore by having a total of 9 months (major project pre-production and final major production), we should be able to create a good film with real locations and experienced actors.

I was the editor during the Transitions unit, but I felt like I didn't contribute much to the planning and production side because my role was purely during the post-production stage. I have decided to be the producer for this film, as I will be working mainly in the pre-production stage and will be able to contribute more towards the planning of the film.
Group tutorial:

- Either me or Katie editing
- Got to feel like a mockumentary
- Location & cast have to be realistic, e.g.filming in a vet's
- All Creatures Great And Small
- Start from the very beginning, what is it exactly what we want to do
- Finding correct contributors is a very important part / brings the piece together
