DIRECTIONS: Lighting Workshop

Today was a lighting workshop with Ferg, I really enjoyed todays workshop as it was all new to me and I learnt a lot about how to put up the lights and the different types of lighting there are. After Ferg showed us the basics we did it ourselves in small groups. Sophie, Callum and myself set up our camera and lights. We started with one light and then progressed to two and then three to complete our three point lighting.

We were creating shadows with one light, called the 'key' light, so we then added the second light called the 'fill' light which filled in the shadows made by the key light. The third light, called the 'back' light, we then used was to separate the subject from the background.

The main two lights we used were open faced and Fresnel. An open faced lighting fixture is used to create hard light that casts hard shadows. It provides nothing in between the bulb and the subject. A fresnel lens is divided into concentric circles which results in a thinner lens than normal. We can then change the light beam from a flood light to a spot light by changing the distance between the lamp and the lens.
