To start off with my extra research into news, I decided to look at different types of news platforms, such as, on the television and online.
On the news on television, there is usually a reporter telling the story and we see a lot of them, they also stay in front of the camera for the majority of the report and they provide the centre piece in packages with the PTC. However, online content is more about the viewers' experience. The presenter are a part of the story more and simply are there to guide the audience through. Therefore, we see less of them and more of the story.
Music is another difference. Online, music is expected by the audience to enhance the piece, whereas on TV they tend to go for a 'soft' piece on reports such as films, fashion or anything which is more light-hearted.
The tone between the two types of news broadcast are different also. The news on the TV is traditionally quite formal and usually more information is put out in a short two minute report. Online news, however, has a more informal style (conversational). The reporter is expected to guide the viewer through the story and ever attempt to make them part of the story. This can often mean the shots are handheld which fits helps the audience to feel apart of the story.
What makes a good story?
Storytelling is an important part in making a good story. The story is vital to ensure important news is interesting for the audience. News is primarily aimed at adults and older people, but depending on the story depends on what age group would be interested in it. The shock factor, proximity, recentness, continuity and the size of the impact are just a few of the things which make a good story. A good news report needs these to keep the audience interested; the bigger the impact from a disaster or attack will increase the shock factor. For example, 2017 has been the one of the worst years for terrorist attacks in the UK, the fact we have so many is shocking and how big the impact has been on so many people is also devastating.
What is dominating the news? (September/October 2017)
- Any new terrorist attacks - UK on high alert
- Brexit
- Harvey Weinstein
- Grenfell (tower blocks) - Slough Borough Council is paying about £2000 for a fire engine/fighters to sit outside the privately owned Nova House in Berkshire incase anything happens
Relation to our news report
Our news report is for an online channel, therefore we should aim to follow the set up of the typical online channel as I wrote about at the beginning of this post. We are planning for our presenter (Alex)
to only be on camera to introduce the reports, therefore, he is only there to guide the audience through the programme, rather than going through the actual story himself and being at the locations. Online news stories are also usually handheld, this is something that we are all for in our project. We want the majority of it to be handheld so this will work well, being online. We also believe handheld will go with the quirky theme of our idea.
