'AS LIVE' PRODUCTION: Developing Final Idea for the Pitch

Katie and myself met up on the Monday, a week before the pitch, to work on the pitch together and to put our separate ideas into one. Here, we decided on our 25 word pitch, working title, channel, target audience and the format.

25 word pitch: A fashion chat show exploring the antidote to the mainstream, played out fashion trends. Targeted towards normal, working men and women, with average budgets.

Breakdown of pitch:
We wanted to include every bit of our idea into the pitch so we covered every aspect of what we want our show to be like:

"the antidote to the mainstream" - what you need if you don't want the mainstream clothing, the cure to it.

"played out fashion trends" - over the top fashion trends, overdone and everywhere on media and TV, trends we've seen everywhere and want something a bit different, e.g. a lot of trends are suited for really skinny people that we see online and on tv but it is rare to have a bigger sized model or fashion that isn't bodycon or skin tight clothing.

"normal" - we specifically wanted to focus on 'normal' people and not celebrities. A lot of the fashion shows on TV show reality stars or famous people and we wanted ours to be about normal people with normal lives. Our contributors will also be normal people.

"working men and women" - this section of the pitch shows that rough age range we are aiming our show towards. 'Working' suggests roughly 16-50 which is the age range we wanted. We are mainly aiming towards young people but we know that people 40 years old and above will also be interested in this idea so we had to include them. We want men to be interested in the show also, we didn't want it to be all pretty and pink and girly as it wouldn't appeal to men. To combat this we want two presenters, one female and one male, this way we will have a male opinion also. Additionally, there will be sections on mens fashion.

"average budgets" - again, with the idea of including 'normal' people, they have 'normal' budgets and average jobs, we want to look at affordable fashion which won't break people's budgets.

Working title: Steal the Style
Ideally, we are finding different styles that are away from mainstream fashion for our studio audience to like and possibly find / steal for themselves.

Channel / broadcaster:
Channel 4
Channel 4's content is "aspirational yet attainable. The format should be informed by a compelling and, ideally fresh insight around human behaviour. Whether that's relating to home, fashion or food, our shows set out to reflect both the way we live now and how we can live life better" (4commissioning, n.d.). Popular factual programmes take up the weekdays in peak on Channel 4 and returning series and eye catching one-offs at 8pm.

ITV
Is home to "high quality, popular television from the biggest entertainment events to original drama, soaps, sport, factual series and independent news, both national and regional" (ITV, 2014). After looking into ITV, our programme probably won't suit that channel, as it is more about advice, lifestyle and fun, but it's not quite an entertainment show - more a lifestyle show.

ITVBe
ITVBe showcase "lifestyle and entertainment programming from the UK and US, featuring real lives, and real people" (ITV, 2014). ITVBe is more suited for our programme than the main ITV channels because Steal the Style is a lifestyle programme because we are helping the audience to dress in everyday clothes which are different to the mainstream style. We want to have real people involved as the guests because we are aiming to interest real, working people.

E4
The 'E' in E4 stands for entertainment, which explains the content they feature. I wouldn't quiet say our show is mainly entertainment, as it hasn't got a lot of comedy in it. E4 is also aimed at a younger generation, whereas we want to relate to ages between 16-50. Therefore, I don't think Steal the Style will be best suited on this channel.

Really
Really is a "real life TV channel" including "astounding documentaries, real life crime stories and lifestyle programming". (UKTV, n.d). Really could house our programme because it is a lifestyle channel, including real life stories with real people, like our programme.

Ideal World
I scrolled down the television guide and saw Ideal World. This isn't a channel I usually watch but I noticed they feature a lot of fashion shows such as Anamor Fashion Pick of the Day and Friday Fashion. They cater for more 30 years old to middle-aged fashion rather than teenagers and young adults. They also show home and beauty shows which is something we considered to all link in with 'style', shows such as All Season Duvet Blockbuster and Comfort and Dreams Pick of the Day.

Chosen broadcaster: Channel 4
We think that Channel 4 is a strong choice for our show, their content is around human behaviour and real people, and real people are who we wanted to feature on the show and who the show is aimed at. The 6th most watched programme, The Great British Bake Off (2017), brought in 10 million viewers. 7th most watched programme, Big Brother (2002), brought in another 10 million viewers and the 8th most watched programme on Channel 4, Big Fat Gypsy Weddings (2011), brought in 9 million viewers, and these three programmes all follow real people.

Passion For Fashion, She's Gotta Have It and How To Look Good Naked are all fashion shows which have broadcasted on Channel 4, but none of them are still on now so there is a market on Channel 4 for our programme Steal the Style.

Target audience:
We want to target an audience of working men and women because we want the show to appeal to both genders, not just women's fashion. The word 'working' can imply a 18-50 age range. It is mainly aimed at young people but is open to older people wanting to hear about the affordable fashion. Someone we spoke to in their late 40s said they would be interested in our show and the fashion involved, so we had to increase the normal 18-30 age range to 18-50.

We want two presenters, one who is a fashion expert so our audience will be able to trust what they are saying about fashion, and we want the other to be funny and have a bubbly character so they can have 'banter' and hopefully get along well. We pictured these to be similar in personality as Gok Wan (fashion expert) and Georgia Toffolo (bubbly person).

Gok Wan and Georgia Toffolo

Schedule:
- 7 pm
- typical job is 9 - 5/6 so having it start at 7 will allow the majority of working people to get home, have dinner and settle down
- weekday, early week?
- Monday / Tuesday
- after the News

Format:
4 sections with 4 VT's

1st section
TRENDS OF THE WEEK
How to follow the trends by going against them - how to style the trends differently - people want to follow the trends but do them differently.
Discussing the weeks trends with a guest on the sofa - almost like a The One Show format. Talk about how you can keep up with current trends but dress differently - see how everyone else is wearing the trends and do the opposite.

1st VT
Reporter going around different stores and trying to piece together outfits following the trends.

Cut back to the studio to rate the trends of the week as 'HOT OR NOT' on the Anti-Fashion 'Top Gear type' Wall

2nd section
MICROBRANDS
Going round micro shops and bring in the owner into the studio - why they started the business  - what they have that big high street brands don't have. Why having an independent store is better than a chain store. Ideas and designs

2nd VT
Back up what they said - GVs and narration / maybe get one of the presenters to narrate it

3rd section
VERY VINTAGE
We originally had 'Fast Fashion' but we struggled to find an idea for this to talk about in the section, because of this Katie came up with 'Very Vintage' because we are doing about fashion which isn't the normal / mainstream fashion. Not a lot of people are into 'vintage' clothing because it's not the typical mainstream style. Therefore, this idea fits well into our programme.

3rd VT
For the VT, we want to go to different vintage markets, and possibly have the presenters / location reporter try and find outfits with a reasonable budget.

4th section
DIGGING THROUGH THE WARDROBE OF...
Each week we go through someone else's wardrobes to see what clothes they have / their fashion. What's there oldest piece in the wardrobe, anything handed down through family. What's their favourite piece in their wardrobe - could be 30 years old but they still wear it regularly.

4th VT
Shots of going through the persons wardrobe

Cut back to the wardrobe owner in the studio and chat to them about their fashion

Why we think it should be commissioned:
- It's different and original
- Very few chatty / advice based fashion programmes so there's a huge gap in the market for it
- Most similar show The Clothes Show pulled in 13M viewers weekly whilst it was on air, showing there is an interest in this type of programme
- Doing this type of show gives us all a different project to work on, we all worked on the game show last year so it will be nice to do something different this year

Running order:
- Introduction of show - 10 seconds
