'AS LIVE' PRODUCTION: Research into Previous Fashion Chat Shows

When we first thought of doing a fashion chat show for our final idea, we looked into previous and current chat shows with the intention of finding what is already on the market and what different shows there are room for. Shows which came to mind were The Clothes Show, Mens Fashion Insider and How to Look Good Naked

The Clothes Show, 1986 - 2000
The Clothes Show was introduced in 1986 and it was broadcasted on BBC One. The show combined reports from catwalks with items on how to achieve a catwalk-style look on a reasonable budget. It was very successful but ended in 2000. However, in 2006, The Sun reported that The Clothes Show was to return and would be shown on UKTV Style. The programme moved from UKTV Style to a new channel, called Really, after UKTV Style was rebranded to Home in 2009, a British interior home and garden-orientated lifestyle television channel.

With the show being so successful, it brought the Clothes Show Live in 1989. This was a consumer exhibition brand held annually in December at the Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre. The event showcases the latest fashion, beauty and music.

The main aim of the live show was to "offer viewers the chance to get up close and personal with the fashion industry like never before" (Wright, 2016). The first show was at London's Olympia in 1989 which had a massive turnout, 50,000 shoppers came through the doors with some queuing for hours to get in. This year (2018) it has already been announced that it will be opening in Liverpool for three days of catwalks and fashion fun.

Relation to our show
- The Clothes Show's aim was to show clothing at a reasonable price for normal people which is the same aim as ours.

- As this original show has stopped now and apart from the Clothes Show Live, there isn't another show which has replaced it on television, this means that there is a section in the market for this sort of chat show.

- I watched a couple of episodes of The Clothes Show and some featured VTs on location of presenters going to shops and talking to the owner / customers similarly to what we want to do. They also had models promoting the clothes, and when the outfit was being shown, they zoomed into the piece of clothing / accessories and had a small graphic stating where the piece was from and for what price. Del has already said that he can see our show being relatively graphic heavy, with prices and shops saying where the pieces are from.

Mens Fashion Insider
As we are going into mens fashion as well as ladies, I thought it would be a good idea to research into how they promote mens fashion. Mens Fashion Insider is a mens fashion television show created, hosted and produced by fashion critic Marcellous L. Jones. The programme shows the best of mens fashion from around the world and it includes interviews with top designers. The show ran from 2009 to 2014 and is broadcasted by a Canadian channel, OUTtv.

The show mainly includes visiting catwalks and the presenters talk to people involved with the fashion. Similarly to The Clothes Show, it gives visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with designers / the clothes / the models. The presenters also take the viewers backstage to see all the work that goes into the catwalk and different fashion.

Relation to our show- I watched a couple of episodes and they feature catwalks with male models promoting the clothes in the show. We haven't decided yet, but we will need a way to show off the clothes so having models may be the path we go down, and therefore, we will need female and male models.

- On one of the episodes, a presenter was showing particular suits and called them 'trends', we are including trends in our show in the 'Trends of the Week' section.

- They explain how and why they paired the pieces together, e.g. the shirt with the suit. We will be doing this, when we explain what was paired with the vintage clothing or pieces the presenters from the high street shops.

- When the presenters visit the catwalks it reminds me of the sort of look we want for when our presenters go to the vintage fair. They'll be talking to people and chatting about the clothes they find, which is essentially what they're doing at the catwalks. They talk to people who are involved with the fashion on the catwalk, e.g. the distributors, we will be talking to people who work at the vintage fair / shop there.

How to Look Good Naked

How to Look Good Naked was a fashion show presented by Gok Wan, he would help the women learn how to dress for their body and how to look good naked to raise their self confidence. I always watched this show was it was interesting to see how he would dress different body shapes, within the trends at the time and it was a very popular programme.

It ran from 2006 - 2010 and hasn't returned or had a similar substitute since. There is a market in the television industry for this sort of show because there is nothing like it on now. The show's USP was that it helped women look good but with no encouragement of plastic surgery or to lose weight. The format of the show included sections like taking photos of women naked and putting blow up versions on buses and buildings for everyone to see how beautiful the women are, and Gok would cut up their current underwear and replace it with smaller, prettier underwear.

The show was so successful it had a many versions in different countries, these included the USA (which had also been aired in Australia), Belgium, Sweden, Italy, France, Israel, Poland, Canada and the Czech Republic. It was broadcasted on Channel 4 in the evenings, suitable for working women to get home from their jobs and watch it.

Relation to our show
- On How to Look Good Naked, Gok primarily worked with bigger women who didn't feel comfortable naked, we can bring this into our show by possibly having a 16+ section or by simply having bigger models instead of super skinny models.

- We see Steal the Style being on Channel 4 and in the evenings, for the purpose of working men and women, allowing them to get home from work and watch it.

- We won't be having any women in their underwear but our aim is to show clothes which look good on a bigger woman and that are keeping up with today's trends.
