'AS LIVE' PRODUCTION: Presenter Auditions

Gavin and George skyped a number of people who responded to Jack's Casting Call Pro, Mandy & StarNow adverts. They narrowed down the applicants by their availability and first impressions. Today, we had four people in to audition for the role of Presenter 1 and Presenter 2.

We also had a day with Del in the Studio because we were snowed off last week - meaning we are already a week behind in the lead up to the show. Because of this, we didn't want to take six people out of the session with Del, so we split up and had one producer (Katie), one director (George) and one PA (Jemma) for the individual auditions and one producer (Me), one director (Gavin) and one PA (Victoria) for the pairs auditions.

This was helpful but we would have all liked being in both auditions because we wanted to see how they got on in both.

The applicants were all given an audition pack made by Jemma, so they could practice a section from the script and knew how the day would go. Inside this included how to get to the studios and different transport options, the dates we would need them for (VTs, RX and TX), what to wear and two scripts, one for the individual audition and one for the pairs audition.

Individual auditions
As I wasn't in these auditions, we all came back together at the end to discuss who we wanted as presenter and Katie, George and Jemma briefed us on the individual auditions.

We originally had two girls interested, however, one dropped out a few days ago because of travel. Therefore, this left us with the one female and three male applicants.

Rob:
- Used to host music and fashion, wants more fashion experience
- Likes high street fashion
- Has done live radio - used to the pressure of live

Adeline
- Has a passion for fashion
- She is confident and stage experience
- Likes classic fashion with a modern twist: Audrey Hepburn as a fashion influence, likes a cinched waist to get an hourglass figure

Andy:
- Style conscious as an actor
- Likes to change up his look
- An every-man that relaxes people because they relate
- Has done stage acting but not live TV
- Has camera terminology

Alfie:
- Open to others' fashion opinions, so likes variety of fashion, easy to have a conversation
- Has a stage background, has worked in 'live' and has used talk back
- Has versatile fashion style - has lived in different countries and adapts to their style fashion
- Likes well fitted jeans and good boots

Pairs auditions
These auditions were taken by myself, Gavin and Victoria. Gavin did most of the speaking while Victoria and I took notes.

We started by pairing Adeline with each of the boys:
Adeline & Rob
Adeline & Andy
Adeline & Alfie

1st task:
We asked them to rate each others outfits to start with, as if the other person had brought it for them. They will do this after the Steals of the Season VT (the presenter challenge), so it was good to see how they rated clothing, to see if they added more to the conversation rather than "I like it / I don't like it". They all did very well and were very interesting to watch.

2nd task:
We then asked them to read a sample script, this was simply the first page of the studio script where they introduce themselves, the show and what was coming up in the next half hour. They all ad-libed slightly and made it their own, they all worked very well together as well.

3rd task:
For the last task, Gavin gave each pair a different scenario from the show, e.g. for them to introduce the Fashion Fails segment and go into the audience and talk to someone (Gavin) and ask them about their fashion fail. They also all did very well with this task.

After this, we paired the boys up together. We ideally want a man and woman for our presenters - which is also what Katie and I originally pitched. However, we thought we should try pairing the boys together just incase they had a really good connection as that is the main thing we want in our final presenters - we are willing to have two male presenters if their relationship is really good.

Therefore, we then had:
Alfie & Rob
Rob & Andy
Andy & Alfie

The boys were really good together. We initially thought that we would definitely want a man and a woman but once we heard from the boys, we found ourselves in a difficult position because they were all really good.

After a really difficult decision from myself, Katie, George, Gavin, Jemma and Victoria, we finally chose our presenters - Adeline & Alfie.

They were really good together and were talking to each other every time they were sat outside waiting together. They had also both said they were willing to meet up outside of the audition to get to know each other more. This really stood out to us as it shows that they really want to get a good relationship with each other to make the show better. They both ad-libed well and weren't stuck to the script. They also bounced off each other well. This pairing suited us well in the fact that we now have a male and female presenter, like we originally wanted.

Adeline Close
- 22 years old
- Previously worked as an actor, extra & model
- Will be our 'fashion expert'

Alfie Garston
- 30 years old
- Previously worked in student films, music videos, presenting, radio, theatre, TV & voice over
- Will be our 'bubbly presenter'
