DIRECTIONS: Director - TV

(1)
James Edward Burrows is an American director and producer for television, best known for Will & Grace (1998), Taxi (1978), Mike & Molly (2010) and Friends (1994-1998). He's from Los Angeles, California and is married to Debbie Easton since 1997.

Directional style
Burrows likes to bring in an audience to watch a dry run-through after a couple of days rehearsal. This is because Burrows believes that the first impression of an impartial group of people is better to know how good a show is than people watching the final production. "For most of my hits, those run-throughs have been through the roof. That's how I gauge the show. I see if they like the characters and the actors they don't know. Thats how you know what you have" (3).

Burrows' Development
Burrows started as a director in 1974 on The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Friends and The Big Bang Theory, as well as others in-between to becoming a 10-time Emmy winner who recently had his 1,000th sitcom episode while working on an upcoming NBC sitcom, Crowded.

After deciding that I will be recreating scenes from a break up, at the beginning of the project, I looked into other films and TV shows which show break ups and to see the actors' emotion, how the directors handle it and the choices they made. This research is in my blog post Directions: Research Into Similar Films. Burrows shows a break up between Ross Geller and Rachel Green in one of his episodes of Friends with The One Where Ross And Rachel Take A Break. In the scene after Ross phones Rachel and realises she's with co-worker Mark and expects the worst, we see Rachel sitting at the window, upset and the time passes throughout the night while she's picking up the phone to try and call Ross. Seeing this gave me another insight into the emotion of a break up through the woman's eyes by a director who's work is completely different to my director, Weitz.

I liked Burrows' way of showing Rachel's sadness by her just sitting there waiting for the phone to ring, with a slow song playing in the background. This shot is quite boring and slow, as in there isn't much action in it at all. This gave me the confidence to use his style in this scene and take shots of my actress just wondering about or looking out the window as I can liven them up a bit just by putting background music in.
