'AS LIVE' PRODUCTION: Lighting & Set Design Rigged & Afternoon Rehearsal (1 Day Until Live)

Today was half rehearsal day for us as the set and lighting were getting rigged in the morning. They started at 8 and we were able to rehearse at 11 which was earlier than expected which was good. They tweaked the lighting throughout the day to get the best angles possible, this was really good as they worked with us, our presenters and contributors rather than putting some lights up and leaving them.

We managed to have par cans at the sides of the catwalk which looked really good, and we were able to have coloured lights for the drag act. The lighting team also dipped the lights for the drags performance also. During the rehearsals they were sat in the room to the left of the gallery, so we were able to communicate with them when we wanted the lights up for the audience participation section and after the drag performance.

Par cans at the catwalk

The set was bigger than anticipated, we knew the measurements but once it was up we didn't expect it to be so big. The set had clear sections like we wanted, e.g. the sofa area, hard area and catwalk. The soft area looked really good and homely, when we were on the sofa shots it looked as if we were in a house which is what we wanted - the homely feel.

The flower wall was different to what we expected, Katie and I expected a green leafy wall, but they made little squares and put single flowers in them. We weren't sure whether it suited the tone we wanted, simply because it wasn't what we were expecting, but throughout the day with the correct lighting I started to really like it.

Flower wall

We had to have the green and red sofas, which to start with I was fine with. What I forgot about was that the shows logo would be sat in the middle of them and we chose an orange colour theme. I wasn't keen on the orange, red and green, but again throughout the day with the correct lighting on the set, I started to like it.

Steal the Style set

I wasn't keen on the curtain on the left wall, but when the presenters sat down together on the sofa there was the plain white background for them which may have looked better than a dark brown brick one. Though the camera the curtain looked slightly grey, to combat this they placed two orange lights behind the curtain so they gave an orange glow - this made the curtain look brighter and better behind the presenters.

We had a plain white curtain for behind the catwalk, and then a glitter one to put up for Sapphires performance, after a few rehearsals Katie and I decide to keep the glitter one up throughout the show. It brightened that area with the lights reflecting off it and the white curtain was slightly boring compared with the glitter one.

I think the set design team did a really good job, they surprised us with a few things which we weren't sure on, but everything looked great by the end of the day. It was a lot better rehearsing with the presenters and contributors on a real set rather than around tape on the studio floor - we were able to see the show coming together within the set.

Rehearsals
As the set was rigged by 11am, we were able to start rehearsals in the morning, but these weren't full 30 minute rehearsals, however, we had scheduled three full rehearsals in the afternoon:

14:25 - 14:55 first rehearsal
Reset
15:15 - 15:45 second rehearsal
Reset
16:00 - 16:30 third rehearsal

Again, I made notes after each rehearsal and then tweaked things to improve for the next rehearsal:

Rehearsal 1 - 14:25 - 14:55
- we need to make sure everyone knows there is no cheering when the models come out
- make sure presenters thank models when they're finished on the catwalk - we had this in the script but one of the presenters missed it so we made sure they remembered
- presenter challenge still cuts to black
- fashion fails VT - the counts are incorrect since we took out the placeholder sting
- Bonnies interview was a bit boring - need more conversation
- Bonnie must not walk off set until drag performance so the focus is on the drag at the time she leaves
- Alfie needs dad shoes on cue cards
- Adeline says "coming up in tonights show..." and then the VT says "in tonights show"
- graphics are covering faces sometimes
- make sure Bonnie's mannequin is off set
- make sure floor managers do not cross the cameras when getting mannequin off

To improve for second rehearsal:
- told everyone not to clap when models walk on
- made sure presenters knew remember to thank models for walking on the catwalk
- told Aimee (the editor of presenter challenge VT) about the fade to black and she said she'll sort it that night
- Jemma and Victoria checked the counts since taking out placeholder sting
- I made another cue card for dad trainers for Alfie
- told Drey (editor of the teaser) about the repeat of "in tonights show" and she said she'll remove it that night - we didn't hear it when we were watching them all back which was annoying
- agreed with George L and Simon that the graphics could be under one another on the right hand side of the screen because whatever shot George cuts to they will then never be in the way of anyones faces
- we told Sonia to make sure the mannequin was off when Bonnie leaves, we also told her to go round the back and remove it she walked in front of one of the live cameras by accident in that rehearsal and we can't afford to have that on the live show

Rehearsal 2 - 15:15 - 15:45
- camera 5 during drag interview we could see a gap in the set and someone walked past it round the back
- Alfie made a good joke about being aware of denim on denim but not floral on floral
- the Nike graphic could go in the top left as its in the way of the shoes at the moment
- make sure the wording is correct about Josie's bag after Fashion Fails VT

To improve for the third rehearsal:
-  we told the camera operators about the gaps in the set and they said they'll try to reposition the cameras so they don't show the gaps, but the easiest thing to do was to make Jack (assistant floor manager) aware so no one moves around when they are behind the set
- we have a graphic for the dad trainers but it was in the way off the trainers when the split screen was arranged, maybe put it at the top right so whatever shot is there it won't be covering anything
- I remember writing in the script "I had a bag like that and its now at the bottom of my wardrobe" without knowing the full story of Josie's fashion fail, once I realised what it was I had to change the wording because she wanted a bag and got sent a purse, and then the script says how bad the bag is. Therefore, I changed it to "I get sent the wrong items regularly, like Josie"

Rehearsal 3 - 16:00 - 16:30
- par cans on for models / all the way through the show
- ask the guests to come in for 9am on the 19th if possible

Reflection:

- Rehearsal 3 was really good and I didn't have many notes on it. Each rehearsal has got better and better and I think we'll do a good job tomorrow for the live showing
- The contributors were happy to come in for 9, meaning our first rehearsal will be easier tomorrow
- I have arranged for Nisserin and Becca, who have been standing in for us for the last few rehearsal days, to come in for 9 also to be the audience participants and anyone else if anyone is late in - this will allow the floor managers to do their jobs rather than standing in for people
- I need to make big and bold APPLAUSE signs for the audience runners for tomorrow
- I will contact Conor and Drey tonight asking if the final tweaks for the presenter challenge VT and teaser have been made

Our final rehearsal day before transmission went really well, each rehearsal got better and better. The presenters and contributors said everything they were meant to and said nothing offensive. I was very happy with this because I am responsible for everything they say. The presenters also didn't need any extra information from the background pack which meant that we have got enough content for the whole 30 minutes and didn't need to fill time with lots of questions.

We were exactly 30 minutes for a couple of rehearsals, but some we still weren't to time. This was mainly the introduction and Styles of the Season which usually ran over, we made up some of the time during Fashion Fails and the links to segments as these were usually shorter than we anticipated. If we needed to take anymore time, we thought it would be best to take it from the drag interview as it's the longest, and if we need anymore it'll come from the DIY interview. However, if we need to add any time this will go straight to Bonnie's interview because she is a good talker.
